Variegated Fritillary
Euptoieta claudia

Observation date: June 13, 2020
Date notes: Seen every day since June 13th

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: 10-15 caterpillars on pansies in my backyard. The first day (June 13) I only saw the one big one but now there seems to be more every day. I don't see the largest one anymore. How far do they travel to cocoon? I want to be mindful of where it might be now.
Status: Temporary Colonist

Coordinator notes: Your suggested ID is correct. They usually travel a few feet away from the host plant to pupate, where they’ll construct a small but conspicuous hanging chrysalis with metallic-looking orange or gold spikes.
