Pale Swallowtail
Papilio eurymedon

Observation date: June 04, 2020
Submitted by: Dennis Mullen
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Patrolling a subalpine mountain ridge in Umatilla County OR (Indian Ridge near Walla Walla on the boundary of Mill Creek watershed). Pairs would do spiral climbs in close and tumultuous proximity for several tens of feet, abruptly separate and dive, diverging to patrol different directions along the ridge, often repeatedly. This one perched on a fir tree repeatedly, and each time was hassled by what appears to be a hornet and departed only to return. Markings look like eurymedon but the orange and blue patches normally pictured on the tail and on wing margins are very pale in this individual and the others in the area (about six visible most of the time.
