Observation notes: Cloudy and warm out. Sparse rain today. Caterpillar was on a petunia plant. I moved it to a maple leaf for a better picture.

Coordinator notes: This is the caterpillar of the Variegated Fritillary butterfly, Euptoieta claudia. Are you sure you found it on petunia, not pansy/violet? If you’re sure it was on petunia, then it’s possible it was just using a less common host plant, or it was done feeding and happened to wander onto a petunia plant in search of a location to pupate. Anyway, thanks for submitting your sighting!
