Observation notes: Observed three identical active caterpillars on shaded purple oxalis and violas (appear to have eaten both). Temperature was mid-70s. A couple of hours later saw one of them about 25 feet away crawling rapidly on the open stone patio in full sun. Concerned about him burning on the hot tiles, I scooped him into a large planter, which he quickly exited, then tried a couple of garden spots where he would hopefully find a place to make a chrysalis without getting mowed. He settled on a blade of nutgrass and was not seen again. Note that the full-length picture is on a viola stem and the picture is rotated left 90 degrees; he was atop a stem, not on the underside.
