Observation notes: I have seen this type of caterpillar hanging from a thread at Folsom State Park when very small, and saw large ones on the ground. They are numerous, and I've never noticed them in this area before a couple of weeks ago. It is a heavily forested part of the Park, at the end of Horseshoe Bar Road in Loomis, CA. The photo was not taken at the SP since I was not able to get a photo there because the caterpillars moved too fast, back and forth, when hanging from the thread - but the photo is the exact type of caterpillar. This photo was taken in an asphalt parking lot in a shopping center.
