Observation notes: Mostly cloudy, mid-60's and windy. I spotted this butterfly in the tall grasses not far from a small lake. It was my thought that this beautiful butterfly was not well or was dying. It let me get very close while I was taking pictures, even allowing me to gently pick it up. I carefully set it back in the grasses where I found it.

Coordinator notes: I am sure this is certainly the Anicia Checkerspot and not Edith's which you have previous sent photos. Seems a bit early for it on June 1 (sure it wasn't July 1?). I think if you compare to photos you previously submitted that were ID'd as editha, you will see the difference. The red and white on the middle of the hindwing bands don't blend much on editha, they are usually well separate or separated and it doesn't have the black margin band as this one does. Mike
