White-blotched Heterocampa
Heterocampa umbrata

Observation date: September 23, 2019
Submitted by: Dante Gambino
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This caterpillar was found crawling in the grass and appears to have a injured or dehydrated tail. Its a peach color with a diamond red mark on the back. There was sasafras, cherry, maple and lilac in the area. About 70 degrees and humid. Animal is active.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: I could certainly be wrong about this, but given the many variable presentations of H. umbrata instars, I think sighting could be that. The dried-up and twisty tail may be due to recent molting.
