Woodland Skipper
Ochlodes sylvanoides

Observation date: September 06, 2019
Submitted by: gregslak
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Climbing a steep trail on a north facing slope in Griffith Park, in a primarily mixed chaparral habitat, I encountered a small patch of California Aster which was being fed upon by numerous pale golden-hued Skipper butterflies. I am not confident identifying them by appearance alone, but considering their choice of nectar, California Aster, along with the visible markings, I am leaning toward the Woodland Skippers. I don't know if this is diagnostic, but on the individual shown there is a distinct tiny hooked projection at the tip of the antenna. Despite the dozen or more similar individuals present, I was unable to capture any photos with the wings open.
