Red-humped Caterpillar Moth
Oedemasia concinna

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I believe the caterpillars were feasting on wild red and/or blackberry leaves. I first observed them a couple of weeks (or so), ago when they were quite small and not recognizable. The weather was a cool 68 degrees with a light breeze and sunny. They were grouped together, a few appeared to be in different growth stages, some seemed as though they had passed and some seemed to be injured. There are several clusters throughout the area of berry canes and two other species were also in the area. One was some sort of tussock (black and white and fuzzy), and the other I am not sure about but could possibly be related to an Eastern Tent caterpillar. It was hairy and had grey and orange coloring.
