Western Green Hairstreak
Callophrys affinis

Observation date: July 07, 2019
Submitted by: Tim Fenske
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It's not a great picture, and it seems to be a worn individual. It also seems to be a confusing species after trying to reference it in field guides and online. I'm wondering if the northern New Mexico location can help narrow it down.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Tim, it indeed is a worn hairstreak. Only a trace of the normal green scaling remains, but I think it is tailless by nature, not as a result of wear. At that location, Western Green Hairstreak and Sheridan's Hairstreak are possible, but only Western Green flies in summer.
