White-lined Sphinx
Hyles lineata
Observation date: August 21, 2019
Submitted by: RColonna
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It never set down, constantly flew from flower to flower for a long time, and didn’t seem to mind me being there. Liked the morning glory the most. Hovered like a hummingbird but didn’t make that sound. I see lots of black and white striping on its head and body with pink on the wings; my pics aren’t great because sun hadn’t shone through yet and it never slowed down hence the blurred images. Never saw this before but it’s been atypically hot here so I’m guessing that’s why I’m seeing unusual insects this year.

Coordinator notes: Congratulations! I believe this species is a migrant. However, I have seen photos of larvae in NJ. I'm not exactly sure if they ever successfully overwintered in NJ. Either way, it is a great find. Most Sphinx Moths will feed on flowers at dusk and dawn. White-lined Sphinx is one of a few that fly in NJ that you can see during the heat of the day. They are enjoying your lovely garden and appreciate all of your hard work! It is difficult take high speed photos with a cell phone. However, if you have a setting that says "sport" or a pocket digital camera with a sport setting or a little man that looks like he is running on the dial, try that for objects that are moving. If the shutter is fast enough, you can usually get a clearer photo.
