Anicia Checkerspot
Euphydryas anicia

Observation date: July 10, 2019
Submitted by: Tim Fenske
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Observed at 12,441' elevation. Above treeline. Appearance seems to match field guide pictures of Rockslide Checkerspot, although it seems south of ranges shown in guide books. Did not see underside. At same location observed Anicia or Variable Checkerspot that looked considerably different than this individual.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Tim, you seem to understand the issues. Also know that Variable Checkerspots are more variable in appearance than any field guide can show. Your excellent photos show a butterfly whose eyes are brown. That puts it with the Variable Checkerspots rather than the genus that includes Rockslide Checkerspots, which has grey-blue eyes. Keeping looking and submitting!
