Northern White-Skipper
Heliopetes ericetorum

Observation date: August 09, 2019
Submitted by: gregslak
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: While following a Cabbage White on a small patch of Cliff Asters, I saw a smaller white moth-like butterfly (about 2/3 size). The photo isn't great, but I did clearly see a zigzag pattern along the outside of the dorsal forewing and hindwing, with a faint tan stain-like pattern on the underside. Closest match seems to be the Northern White Skipper, which is found in southern California. This would seem to be a male, which exhibit a plainer white dorsal surface with white "chevron-like" borders.
