Gulf Fritillary
Agraulis vanillae

Observation date: August 08, 2019
Submitted by: gregslak
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Walking in a sparsely visited corner of the park, I first noticed the presence of several Gulf Fritillaries, then spotted a dense growth of Bluecrown Passionflower vines. Though dozens of Fritillaries were visiting the vines and brush, there did not appear to be any nearby flowering plants for them to settle on and feed from. This made photography difficult, as they were rarely still. Determination paid off when this lucky shot caught a female Gulf Fritillary delicately depositing an egg on a thread-like Passionflower vine.
