Observation notes: Many websites indicate that hummingbird moths are nighttime or evening feeders, but we have seen them out in the middle of the day consistently for the past three summers. This year has been particularly lush and full of wildflowers. Among meadow flowers growing along a dirt road through aspen and conifer forest we sited 19 individual moths whereas other years we have only seen maybe one or two. All individuals sited had the same wing coloration, though varied in size, and were feeding almost exclusively on fairy trumpets. The weather was mostly sunny, about 25C/77F, and breezy.
