Observation notes: I discovered this 3 1/2” long caterpillar on my deck hiding under a cluster of Virginia creeper which we have clinging in masses to our deck and pergola. My husband and I have never seen anything like it living in Minnesota for 40 years. We noticed the black hump on one end that looks like an eye. But as I looked at it closer and examined both ends I determined that the black ‘eye’ must be the butt end of the critter. Also we noticed it’s belly is a pale shade of pink. We tucked it safely back into a mass of Virginia creeper for camouflage so the birds don’t see it. Just want to let you know that we think it could be bordering on ‘rare’ to see this species in Northeastern Minnesota. We are avid outdoors people and never have seen a caterpillar like this. Thank you for your time! You helped us solve a mystery! We appreciate your website!
