Observation notes: Caterpillar was climbing the net over our deck koi pond. Above the net is a yellow patio umbrella. I don't know why it was climbing the net, or if it was trying to get to the umbrella. We have numerous plants growing on the deck in pots, including multiple types of tomatoes, several varieties of mints, several varieties of basil, lemon verbena, several different coleus, three succulent pancake plants, half a dozen lime starters, eight large citrus shrubs. It was in the upper 80's to low 90's. I was concerned that the caterpillar might end up in the pond and drown or get eaten so I offered it a twig to climb onto, which it took. I transferred it to a bronze fennel plant in one of our garden beds. I didn't know if it ate that plant but know the swallow tail butterfly caterpillars love it. It was gone the fowwing day and have not seen it since. I did not know the type when I found it but identified it from pictures and descriptions on line
