Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui

Observation date: June 24, 2019
Submitted by: WINGSaloftinKS
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Seen at Baker Wetlands near an area of piled wood and brush. Kept flying around with a Monarch--each going to the same plants, flying through the air together and occasionally twirling around and around each other up in the air; in fact, I originally thought the Painted Lady was just a smaller Monarch at a distance, until I zoomed in and started taking pictures. The Monarch went higher up into the Amer. Elm tree eventually... aggression by one or the other? I didn't realize different species of butterflies did that? Size: Approx. 2.25-2.5" wingspan. Weather: 81 degrees, 45% humidity, sunny skies.
