Hackberry Emperor
Asterocampa celtis

Observation date: June 13, 2019
Submitted by: WINGSaloftinKS
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Seen at the dog park very near the pond (that has filled back up) on a rocky/dirt path between the pond surrounded by all kinds of trees and brush and a slope filled with boulders on the other side of the path. Several types of butterflies were fluttering around in that area. The Emperor stayed mostly on the ground or would fly near me, low to the ground, occasionally landing on me. In one of the photos, it even looks like it's nectaring or trying to nectar from my shoe? Size: Approx. 2" wingspan. Weather: Approx. 79 degrees, 35% humidity, blue clear skies.
