Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui

Observation date: May 13, 2019
Submitted by: sandyleapt
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found three Vanessa cardui. Specimen pictured nectaring on Raphanus raphanisturm, then moved to ground and folded wings when it noticed me photographing it. All the butterflies were moving from the lower east end of the field towards the upper west end of the field. The one pictured stopped to nectar. I disturbed the butterflies while mowing tall grass, more of a field than a lawn. The day had been overcast, clouds just breaking up and the sun started to warm things up. should have watched where they went.
