Observation notes: This butterfly was flitting about up and down and also flying quickly in a straight line when it chose to. I had to wait some minutes before it landed so I could take a few pictures. I was about 20 feet away and I took some pictures from where I was standing. I was worried it would take off if I moved closer or if I waited too long. It was sitting on a Viola sororia leaf, a caterpillar host plant of the Variegated Fritillary. I'm not sure if it was looking for host plants to lay eggs.
