Observation notes: We went to Johnson Valley, California, and there were thousands of caterpillars, possibly more. The high was 75 degrees on Saturday, April 20th, and there were wind gusts of 25 mph. Some of the caterpillars were blown around. The majority were traveling in a westerly direction. Some were feeding on creosote scrub and other wildflowers. Over the period of about an hour, we watched one burrow itself into the sand to where it was undetectable.
