Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui

Observation date: November 19, 2018
Submitted by: zencoyote
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Painted Ladies seem to be a rare observation in the area North of Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad. Nevertheless I have spotted one in the La Costa area several times late in the season. Very timid, and an exceptionally fast flier, pictures are difficult. This individual seemed to be taking warmth from the ground much like how Mourning Cloaks behave, and are hard to spot in the colorful Marigolds planted in the Sunrise Retirement Facility, unless they startle into flight. Species was confirmed, via details in the coloration of the fore-wings.
