Western Tent Caterpillar Moth
Malacosoma californicum

Observation date: June 03, 2018
Submitted by: sgguthart
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This caterpillar was found on our native Wax Currant (Ribes cereum).
Status: Resident
Verified by: A_baldini
Verified date: March 26, 2019
Coordinator notes: Correct identification. Colorado's most common tent caterpillar species (though we also have Sonoran and Southwestern, and rarely some others). They'll use almost any broadleaf shrub or tree as a host plant. 2018 seemed to be one of their "infestation years;" they covered almost every mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus sp.) in the Poudre Canyon last May.
Checklist region(s): United States, Colorado, Larimer County
