Western Pygmy-Blue
Brephidium exilis

Observation date: November 30, 2018

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I saw this tiny butterfly flying low--not a foot off the ground--and landing on the old pavement. I was on a walk-break from work at the time and unfortunately did not have a good camera with me. All I had to capture a picture was the camera on my phone. The resulting picture is not good but there are some recognizable characteristics visible such as size, white fringe, bronze area near tip at underside of wings, and some of the black dots. The subject was not much bigger than 1 cm or 1/4 inch. I noticed there were chenopodiums nearby, though that's possibly only a larval food. I got a fairly good look at it with my eyes before taking the picture and saw both sets of black dots on underside wings, if that helps. The weather was clear and crisp following a rain yesterday. Temperature was probably in the upper 50's to low 60's. I don't remember it being windy at all (remarkably).

Coordinator notes: I'm surprised any butterflies were around. That rain really helped the tumbleweeds in western Kern County in Bakersfield but there were no butterflies here-Ken Davenport
