Observation notes: We observed and photographed the life cycle of the Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor) this summer. The weather was warm, the adult used zinnias and bog sage (Salviafuli ginosa) for nectar plants. The owner of the property planted pipevine (Aristolochia macrophylla) and found eggs shortly after the first visit by an adult. She then found the larvae and moved it to a cage when the larvae went to a "j" shape. The chrysalis was one of the most beautiful things I have ever had the privilege to see and photograph. We were unable to find or photograph the hatched adult after the owner opened the cage to let it out. The first observation was on 02Jul2018 and the hatch was on 30Jul2018. This was a wonderful experience. JWT

Coordinator notes: Comment by Austin Baldini: Amazing job documenting the life cycle of the Pipevine Swallowtail! Again, you should suggest the egg, caterpillar, and chrysalis photos for the BAMONA photo gallery, especially the chrysalis. Comment by Mike Fisher: Sorry this took so long to confirm Janeal. Several weeks ago now, I accidentally hit the "cannot identify" button and the sighting went into oblivion and it took me a while to get it back to where I finish and confirm. I'll suggest the photos you put together on this be placed into the BAMONA photo gallery as Austin suggested above. I mentioned to you before that this is really a phenomenal documentation for Colorado. We'll hope the pipevine makes it through this winter at Lorie's gardens and if it does see if this gets repeated again next year! Mike
