Observation notes: I'm the volunteer "English Gardener" at the Webster Comfort Care Home (a Hospice) located at the intersection of Holt and Klem Rds. in Webster, NY 14580. My aim is to have blooms from early Spring (primroses/hellebores) until the end of the Autumn (Michaelmas daisies). Each Summer, Monarch butterflies congregate over a large planting of Buddleia bushes. One of the other garden areas is a "Wild Garden", with Butterfly Weed, Milkweed, Bee Balm, Joe Pye Weed etc., PLUS Stinging Nettles. In past years, the Nettles have attracted Red Admirals and Painted Lady butterfly larvae, and in the Autumn these butterflies swarm over compact Zinnia plants. Today, 9-24-2018, I spotted a solitary Milbert's Tortoiseshell (Aglais milberti) on the pathway leading to the Hospice. Unlike the Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) of the UK that typically swarm all over autumnal flowers such as Buddleia or Sedum, today's butterfly was quite skittish and I was only lucky enough to get a digital image from afar.
