Walnut Caterpillar Moth
Datana integerrima

Observation date: August 24, 2018
Submitted by: crittermom
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: 3 of these caterpillars were crawling 10-15 feet away from each other in zoysia grass in 1/4 acre backyard. The yard is surrounded by 1/2 acre of deciduous trees (oak, hickory, black walnut, poplar, dogwood, maple, etc.) plus a few pine trees and bamboo. There is a small herb garden, as well as blueberry, blackberry and raspberry bushes around perimeter of yard. A few flowering plants are around (marigold, petunia, portulaca, azaleas). Caterpillars were not near plants or trees, only in the grass. The temperature and humidity were quite a bit lower than past month, and there had been no rain for 2 days after a week long period of daily thunder showers.
