Glassy Cutworm
Apamea devastator

Observation date: August 24, 2018
Submitted by: Maizie.Rocke
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Looks very much like a Ghost Moth variety. It was not on a host plant but found on a cardboard box inside the vestibule of our home. The box came from a contractor's trailer office at NIST (MD) 08/12/2018. This does not mean that the caterpillar originated from the site as it could have gotten into the house by other means. It was returned to grass under a plum tree outside [later found out it likes Oak but couldn't find it to relocate] but we also have a number of Oak, Dogwood, Apple, Lilac, Iris species, etc. outside (City of Rockville, Montgomery County, MD). Coordinator notes: Does look a little like Hepialus humuli (Ghost Swift Moth), but I can't find evidence that this moth exists in the US. I think this is a garden-variety glassy cutworm, Apamea devastato. It isn't Cameraria.
