Tawny Emperor
Asterocampa clyton

Observation date: August 21, 2018
Date notes: Seen over a 1 hour & 17 minute range - about 3 of them
Submitted by: Englishman
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The butterfly repeatedly landed and then opened and closed its wings before settling down to being wings-closed at rest. When open, the upper side was orange and was devoid of any very bold pattern (but had some subtle markings) I think I recognized it as a Tawny Emperor, if so, it's the first one I've seen in this yard for the 5 years and 3 months I've lived here (although I saw one 1 mile east of here some years ago). I was unable to photograph the upper side. Weather hot and dry.
