Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
Papilio glaucus

Observation date: August 09, 2018

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Saw TWO Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, seemingly flying together, at the park flying around the butterfly garden beds which featured Butterfly Bushes, Zinnias, Black-eyed Susans, Portuluca, Blue Salvia, Pink Angelonia and Purple Fountain Grass. They seemed to prefer the white Butterfly Bush best (as did many other flying insects). Enclosing photos of both here. One of them had their left hind wing and tail chewed/missing. When they got on a blossom to nectar they beat their wings furiously, finally stopping very briefly to nectar, then would fly to the next spot, and again beat their wings furiously, then calm down, quickly nectar, sail to the next blossom, etc. Didn't mind me getting quite close to photograph them. Weather: 95 degrees, 40-45% humidity, sunny. Approx. size: 4" wingspan
