Date notes: partly cloudy but mostly sunny day in the evening
Submitted by: Stevi.Wood
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I found the moth sitting inside of my trash can that is sitting up next to the back of my house. The trash can didn't have a lid and was in a shaded area under the eve of my house. It was slightly down in between a couple plastic cups and cans not moving at all. At first I thought it was dead. I scooped it up and it moved its legs and fluttered it wings a little but not much. It seemed weak and was unable to fly. I put it in a bug container for a few hours to show my kids and took the picture. While in the container it seemed like it was too heavy for it winds or legs to carry its body. I was curious to find out what type it was Bc I had never seen an orange moth in such a large size. By researching your site I believe it is the Royal Walnut Moth. Also, I found the moth in the evening around 5:30 as I came down from the pool in my backyard to throw a few pieces of trash away. It was a sunny but cloudy day and was hot around 80 to 85 degrees at that time although the trash can was in a shaded area.
