Painted Crescent
Phyciodes picta

Observation date: July 14, 2018
Submitted by: Janeal W. Thompson
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Property owner, Lorie Kaczmarek asked me to take a photo of a crescent which was different than the Pearl Crescent she normally sees in her garden. Noted the underside was pale. The butterfly was favoring the coreopsis in her garden. Photograph by Janeal W. Thompson
Status: Resident
Verified by: A_baldini
Verified date: August 11, 2018
Coordinator notes: The almost-white ventral hindwing, along with the black markings on the ventral forewing, proves that your identification of this nymphalid is correct. The Field Crescent looks extremely similar on the dorsal side, but the ventral side sets it apart from the Painted Crescent.
