'Astyanax' Red-spotted Purple
Limenitis arthemis astyanax

Observation date: June 24, 2018
Submitted by: c4c
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Empty chrysalis on a grass stalk.
Status: Resident
Verified by: drerbium
Verified date: February 13, 2021
Coordinator notes: This looks like a red-spotted purple or viceroy chrysalis that had a parasite inside. It did not emerge the normal way, the wing cases are not cracked open. Because of that, there is no clear indication of which species it is. Sometimes it is possible to see wing color through, but not in this form. I'd say 95% chance it is red-spotted purple, and don't think it is misleading to label it as such since that is neither surprising at this location or likely to lead to misidentification of others.
