Coordinator notes: This is another male Purplish Copper (unusual for the animal kingdom, females of this species are more colorful than the males). Since they seem fairly common in your area, I would recommend trying to raise caterpillars of this species, as very little information and few pictures exist of the egg, larval, and pupal stages. Simply plant native knotweeds (Polygonum sp.), docks (Rumex sp.), and cinquefoils (Potentilla sp.) at your house or the location of your sightings, and frequently check the plants for eggs, caterpillars (plain green and hairy), and pupae. Try to take pictures of all three stages, and then submit a detailed sighting to BAMONA that includes all the pictures. The website raisingbutterflies.org is a very helpful resource.
