Variable Tussock Moth
Dasychira vagans

Observation date: June 11, 2018
Submitted by: NatureBunny
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found in my house and lifted and moved with a sheet of paper. Photographed to post in a gardening Facebook group and asked for id assistance.
Status: Resident
Verified by: A_baldini
Verified date: August 17, 2018
Coordinator notes: This is actually a Variable Tussock Moth caterpillar. The Rusty Tussock Moth's caterpillar has four large, prominent yellow-white "tufts" on its back (behind the head) that this one lacks. In the future, try to take photos in open, natural light instead of in a brightly-colored container like this. Natural lighting makes the identification process easier for us coordinators. Thanks for the submission!
