Draco Skipper
Polites draco

Observation date: May 27, 2018
Submitted by: A_baldini
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Time: 11:43 a.m. Elevation: 7,654 ft. (upper foothills). General Weather Conditions: Partly cloudy, with thunderheads boiling up in the distance. Moderate breeze (10-15 mph). Observation Notes: This was the sole grass skipper among a swarm of duskywings and a few swallowtails mud puddling alongside the road. I am stumped on identification, however. The markings on the ventral hindwing look like those of the Draco Skipper, but the coloration and wing shape look more akin to a Western Branded or Juba skipper; however, it is way too early for the Western Branded Skipper to be flying, but plausible for the Draco Skipper. I checked all the skippers known from Larimer County, and none seem to match. Do you know what it is?

Coordinator notes: This is the Draco Skipper as you suggested it might be, a fresh male. The long pointed spot in the band on the hindwings is diagnostic for this species. Mike
