Juniper Hairstreak
Callophrys gryneus

Observation date: April 11, 2018
Submitted by: Erik Alford
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: 73 degrees F, sunny with slight breeze. Observed 3 to 5 individuals. Some were staying on the tips of eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) that grow just outside the fence of the athletic fields at the Pisgah Athletic Complex in Johns Creek, Ga. The cedars grow on the steep slope of an old C&D landfill and were possibly planted as screening between the complex and adjacent high end residential development. Individuals of the hairstreak observed would stay on the tips until another individual flew by, then an apparent courtship flight would occur as they flew in loops together, followed by one individual returning to the cedar and the other would fly off.
