Observation date: March 14, 2018

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Time: 2:15 p.m. Temperature: 64.1 degrees. Wind Speed: 10 mph. Sky: Hazy, thin cloud cover. Notes: My second butterfly sighting of the year (the other being a Red Admiral that I could not photograph due to rapid flight, seen on March 4). This individual was possibly the smallest Common Checkered-Skipper I’ve ever seen. Vegetation in the area (pictured) consisted of tiny indigo-colored flowers (the only nectar source growing in the area so far this year), grass, dead plant matter, bare dirt, and what I believe is Common Mallow (Malva sylvestris).

Coordinator notes: Correct identification Austin. The Checkered Skipper can be very small early in the season. Mike
