Observation notes: Sunny, breezy, about 70 degrees. Many of these caterpillars, of varying size, were eating the lower leaves of young oak trees. This is a large open field, overgrown with goldenrod, boneset, aster, lespedeza, mixed grasses, with a few small, scattered pin oaks, locust, and juniper. Nearby, between the field and the river, are many mature trees: sycamore, maple, locust, pine, oak.
