Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui

Observation date: September 18, 2017
Submitted by: billbueno
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The insect seemed to be struggling to move in the cool morning air. As I moved my iPhone nearer for this photo, it became very still, with its wings spread.
Status: Temporary Colonist
Verified by: A_baldini
Verified date: December 21, 2017
Coordinator notes: Your identification is correct. As long as the temperature is below 55 degrees Fahrenheit, it is extremely difficult for butterflies to fly. They have to vibrate their wings for a while if they need to crawl, much less fly, in the cold.
