Spiny oakworm moth
Anisota stigma

Observation date: August 25, 2017
Submitted by: Exo514
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I first noticed part of an oak tree completely stripped at Chincoteague Nature Preserve, in a parking lot for a forested walk area. On closer inspection I found an enclosed Polyphemus moth cocoon and this single caterpillar on one of the stripped branches. I brought the branch down to photograph the specimen, but it fell off before I managed to put it in my hand for a photograph. There were likely more oakworms and Polyphemus moth caterpillars, but swarms of mosquitoes forced me to leave.
