Observation date: August 20, 2017
Submitted by: deanf2015@gmail.com
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Was clinging to a mature sagebrush and did not disturb when I walked around it at a distance of about 3.5 feet. Desert climate. Nearest water a cow pond reservoir, spring fed, about 250 yards away. On south-facing aspect of gentle slope. Ungrazed land abutting private heavily grazed (cows) land. In grazed BLM allotments. 100 yards off of lightly used gravel road. Guessing that nearby Riley Butte (4,127 feet elevation) is about 500 feet puts the moth location at about 3,600 feet. Birds seen in area that day include horned larks, sage grouse, red tail hawks, nighthawks, and doves. Voles spotted as well. Numerous mule deer in area, though at time were concentrated in lower lands near creeks. Temperature in the 80s F. Mostly clear skies. The next day was the Great American Eclipse.
