Aphrodite Fritillary
Speyeria aphrodite

Observation date: August 12, 2017
Submitted by: A_baldini
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: These fritillaries were by far the most abundant butterflies around, filling the meadows of flowers near our campsite. I often saw them basking on the ground or on tree trunks in the morning sunlight. These three were seen on a warm, partly cloudy morning. I believe they are all males and females of the same species.

Coordinator notes: I apologize for taking so much time to identify your submissions. I'll try and get through the remainder on the BAMONA site including yours over the next week. In the photos here you have two different species of fritillaries. I can't confirm two at a time so I'm identifying the first picture here and it is a worn male (S. aphrodite). The other you have is a female Speyeria coronis. Maybe its on another picture and I can confirm it from there but it not then you'll know by this note it is different and neither are the Mormon Fritillary which you should find up at much higher elevation where usually it is not found with either of these two species.
