Red-humped Caterpillar Moth
Oedemasia concinna

Observation date: August 10, 2017
Submitted by: Exo514
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I found a huge mass of at least two dozen or more Red-Humped Caterpillars stripping a wild raspberry shrub. It was at Huntington State Park, in the same field where I found multiple Monarch and Virginia Creeper sphinx caterpillars. These specimens appeared to have eaten from the top of the plant down, with the upper leaves completely bare. The weather was quite clear, with a temperature of around 80 Fahrenheit Six days later, most of the plant was stripped, and only a few caterpillars remained. These ones were much larger at almost 2 inches long and were very vibrantly colored.
