Giant Swallowtail
Papilio cresphontes
Observation date: July 30, 2017
Submitted by: Sandra Woods
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This butterfly stayed in our gardens for about 15-20 minutes, mainly in the Echinacea (purple coneflower) blooms; a Monarch had come to feed in the same area just an hour earlier '-) I was able to get a video clip of a few seconds, including feeding and very short flight, but can't upload it to the site. We've lived here 20 years (with butterfly-friendly gardens), and have never seen this type of butterfly before. I tried to get photos of it in flight, as it had a very interesting flight pattern.

Coordinator notes: This large Swallowtail species has been working its range northward, and is now likely established in Southern Quebec and Ontario due to the abundance of its northern host plant, the Prickly Ash. -jmgesell
