Five-spotted hawkmoth
Manduca quinquemaculata

Observation date: July 20, 2017
Submitted by: Exo514
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This specimen was crawling around a parking lot, probably looking for a place to pupate. I decided to take it so I could do a more in-depth analysis of it. The caterpillar, quite obviously a sphinx moth caterpillar, had unusual behavior where it would thrash around violently for several minutes at a time. Eventually, it would calm down before walking normally. I quickly realize that something was wrong, as it had an odd reddish tint, kept falling over when walking, and had no appetite. It died about a week later, possibly due to a disease.
