Abbott's sphinx
Sphecodina abbottii

Observation date: July 08, 2017
Submitted by: lornemack
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Was removing some compost from our compost bin when this came out. It was huge and looked reptilian. It was about the size of a man's pinky, and would "thrash" if you touched it. Very freaky looking. My little bit of online research says it's the caterpillar of an Abbots Sphinx moth, but it seems to be out of it's range.
