Observation date: July 11, 2016
Date notes: The photo was taken 7/11/16, but I first saw this caterpillar several days before that, and I'm now seeing them everywhere.

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: These are short (~1/2" - 3/4") fuzzy/furry-looking caterpillars, and appear "white" regardless of the color of the background item on which they appear. I've not seen this caterpillar on any plant material, but they appear to be on just about any other surface (e.g., front porch support as in the photo, back deck rails, hot tub cover, etc.). There are several tall trees that overhang or abut the house (including Black Walnut and Red Maple). All the caterpillars I've observed are white; none are the "buff" or "light caramel" color of the Virginia Tiger Moth Caterpillar (Spilosoma virginica) as shown on Wikipedia.
