Anise Swallowtail
Papilio zelicaon

Observation date: July 05, 2016
Submitted by: Linda Rodgers
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found on it's food source in shade in oak woodland, approx 72 degrees F with nights in the 60's. Photo is taken with a 150mm macro lens. Caterpillar is 22mm long by 2-3mm wide. The food flower is currently abundant and growing in clay soil. Although I found this caterpillar in dappled shade the plant is most abundant in open sun. It grows from about 6" to 30+", has no apparent basal leaves and has stiff hairless stems. The closest I can come to identification is Perideridea bolanderi pg 125 of Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest by Mark Turner and Phyllis Gustafson, but that's just my best guess.
